Project accountant

What is a project accountant and what do they do?

A project accountant monitors the progress of projects, investigates variances, approves expenses, and ensures that project billings are issued to customers and payments collected, where relevant. Project accountants play a dual role of gatekeeper (reporting a view of how the project is tracking financially) and advisor (advising the project team on the financial treatment and implications of decisions) liaising with project and finance teams. They may also assist with the development of the financial aspects of the business case for each proposed project.

While the accountancy profession offers diverse career options and paths, the core capabilities required to perform at the highest standards remain the same - irrespective of skill level or job role.

Essential skills to progress your career in finance 5 course pack

This five-course pack from BPP seeks to develop the skills needed for finance professionals to meet the changes they are now facing in their roles. Times, and perceptions, have changed. Increasingly businesses are looking to finance to be more of a partner in their success and less of an overhead. This change of perception has led to increasing opportunities for finance professionals within businesses, away from the day to day processing of journals or budgets. This change of direction has also become a challenge; do finance professionals have the appropriate business and relationship skills, and behaviours, to meet the new role?

This pack aims to provide knowledge and a development structure that will enable you to meet the changing demands of the modern day finance professional. By completing this pack, you will gain a better understanding of:

  • communicating effectively
  • how to give excellent presentations
  • the nature of management and leadership
  • the key elements of effective project management (using Prince 2 methodology)
  • how to negotiate successfully.
