Financial modelling professional

Specialism: Financial management

What is a financial modelling professional and what do they do?

Financial modelling professionals create high quality, flexible and bespoke financial models for organisations. These models allow them to calculate, forecast or estimate financial numbers so that senior management can understand the potential impacts on the organisation of certain decisions or situations.

A financial model is a tool that is built in Excel and contains a set of variable assumptions - inputs, outputs, calculations, and scenarios. It usually includes a set of standard financial forecasts (a statement of profit or loss, a statement of financial position, and a statement of cash flows) which are based on those assumptions. If one or more of the inputs are changed, this impacts the calculations and, therefore, the results (outputs).

Financial modelling professionals analyse historic and current financial information and transactions, perform sensitivity analysis, and prepare and deliver presentations.

Financial modeling plays an integral part in business decision making, with modelers informing key transactions and critical business decisions. Being able to validate your learning with an accreditation allows you to demonstrate technical modeling skills most valued by employers.

The Financial modelling institute (FMI) is the only financial modeling accreditation body in the world. The FMI exists to create and uphold international industry best practices with respect to financial modeling skills. Through its exams and accreditations, the FMI allows candidates, employers and the broader community to recognise true ability in financial modeling.

The Advanced financial modeler (AFM) is the FMI’s first level of accreditation. Only candidates who demonstrate the required level of proficiency in the AFM exam can successfully achieve the AFM accreditation, and show validated expertise in financial modeling.
