Enterprise risk manager/partner

Specialism: Risk management

What is an enterprise risk manager/partner and what do they do?

Risk management, often referred to as enterprise risk management (ERM), reviews the processes within an organisation to assess the risks and manage the business's response to them. The process reviews the likelihood and size of the issues (such as using a SWOT analysis), and the professional will assess these risks, consider their likelihood, probable impacts (including magnitude) and devising a response strategy.

The professional will then monitor the process, making adjustments and reporting accordingly. The enterprise risk manager will be overseeing this process, reporting to the board, managing junior members of staff who will be providing detailed analysis and responsible for overseeing and implementing regulatory changes (such as Sarbanes Oxley in the US, GDPR in UK/EU) and applying best practices in corporate governance, such as the FRC Corporate Governance Code in the UK.

Businesses are increasingly affected by climate issues, supply chain risks (anti-slavery, use of unethical suppliers, lack of raw materials due to climate change etc). The ERM professional will also be required to monitor sustainable business practices and assess the impact of these on the organisation.
